Music is always special when it offers a room for each of us to enter where we unexpectedly find things that we didn’t realise we were looking for.

It is exactly this type of magical musical moment that the Ron Spielman Trio devotes itself to. But what do I mean by « trio » ? This band is a potent, boundery-pushing, majestic rock machine, ripened through countless live gigs and thickly woven together into a very sexy sound. This is rock music for people who have grown up and become adult, without really wanting to. The effect is the same, touching and engagingly authentic but the quality of the music has thickened into a wisdom of sound that incorporates and distils experience, musical and otherwise. Ron Spielman combines in his world-class songs the fragility of the singer-songwriter with the directness and playfulness of rock. The twelve songs from the new (all-original material) album «  Electric Tales « are drawn from life and seemingly  so real that to distance oneself is impossible as the listener is pulled into a parallel world where, surprisingly, one feels at home from the very first note. This is the music that Spielman /Greb /Maclean are currently making.

This album is an increasingly rare example of a truly original work in rock music. Thanks to the trios power, brilliant craftmanship and precision, even the ballads make the listener hover inches above the ground.

»Musik ist immer dann besonders, wenn sie in sich genug Raum bietet, dass jeder eintreten darf, um auf wundersame Weise genau das darin zu finden, was er schon immer gesucht hat. Nicht selten, ohne es zu wissen.

Exakt diesem magischen Musikverständnis hat sich das Ron Spielman Trio verschrieben. Aber was heißt hier Trio? Diese Band ist eine wuchtig nach vorne schiebende, hoch veredelte Rock-Maschine mit einem durch unzählige Live-Auftritte gegerbten, faszinierend dicht gewebten und dabei geradezu – Verzeihung! – abgewichst coolen Sound.
So klingt Rockmusik für Leute, die wie nebenbei erwachsen geworden sind, ohne es jemals gewollt zu haben. Der Ausdruck ist derselbe, berührend und mitreißend authentisch. Aber die Qualität hat sich verdichtet bis zur Weisheit eines Sounds, der alle Erfahrungen des musikalischen wie außermusikalischen Reifeprozesses in destillierter Form mitführt. Ron Spielman verbindet in seinen Songs auf allerhöchstem internationalem Niveau das Filigrane der Welt des Singing-Songwritings mit der lustvollen Direktheit des Rock.
Die zwölf Songs des neuen, ausschließlich aus Eigenkompositionen bestehenden Albums „Electric Tales“ sind dem Leben ganz unmittelbar abgerungene Episoden. So echt, dass keine Distanz mehr möglich ist und man in diese Musik hineingezogen wird wie in eine Parallelwelt, von der man erstaunt feststellt, dass man vom ersten Ton an ganz in ihr zuhause ist. Auf alle Fälle ist es die Musik, die Spielman/Greb/Maclean heute spielen.
Dieses Album ist eines der selten gewordenen Unikate der Rockmusik: Selbst die Balladen geraten diesem außergewöhnlichen Trio infolge des druckvollen, handwerklich brillanten und wunderbar präzisen Spiels so, dass man als Hörer immer ein, zwei Zentimeter über dem Boden schwebt. Sollte es also wirklich so etwas wie eine Befreiung durch Musik geben?

After the release of nine studio albums, Ron Spielman now presents his first live record which features Benny Greb and Edward Maclean. `Absolutely Live ´is the album`s title and it was recorded in Berlin`s legendary `Quasimodo´club. The recording mirrors the unrestrained, imaginative and powerful musical presence of Ron`s trio and the three technically and musically gifted players leave no questions unanswered.

Wow ! what a fantastic record ! What this Ron Spielman trio with bassist Edward Maclean and drummer Benny Greb delivers is hot stuff, and this their first ever concert in Berlin´s legendary club «  Quasimodo ». Live,with no safety net but a lot of energy. Played with heart and soul and a mutual musical understanding that is almost unbelievable for a first performance. Most bands have to invest a lot of time and effort to achieve what these three musicians seem to take for granted : a true band feel ; groove ; dynamics and musical interaction ,..all of which appear effortless most of the time.
The aptly-named record features three Ron Spielman songs ; three Ron Spielman/John C. Barry compositions ( including the opening track « Crazy Hitman », a funky taste of things to come) as well as two very fine and intense covers. These two pearls are by two of the 20th century´s most visionary Rock/Jazz artists : « If Six Was Nine » by Hendrix and « Goodbye Pork Pie Hat » by Charles Mingus.
« Absolutely live » offers the listner several interesting musical aspects : e.g. ron spielman´s fine vocals ( sometimes reminiscent of Sting ), or ( more interesting for us drummers ) : Benny Greb´s sovereign ;fat ‘n’ juicy groove drumming. Our tip is track 2, »There Is No Reason » where no matter where Spielman ventures off, Benny is behind him with a grounded, locked-up groove,…very nice.
Here and there, a few minor mistakes can be heard but these are part of the live and spontanious ‘here and now’ of a live performance. This wonderful album is a lot of fun.
